How to save money on travel without points

Hey Reader,

While I LOVE earning and redeeming points and miles, I totally get that the travel hacking game isn't for everyone.

So today we're gonna talk about a few ways to add to your travel fund without signing up for new credit cards.

1) Bank bonuses

Banks are always competing against one another for your loyalty, and you can take advantage of this. My husband and I have earned nearly $2,000 in bank bonuses over the last year by opening new checking accounts, transferring in the minimum amount, letting the money sit there, then earning a bonus. Then, you can either transfer the money out and close the account, or continue using it.

Opening new bank accounts does not hurt your credit score. The main thing you want to be sure of here is reading the terms and conditions, because every bonus is set up differently.

โ€‹Capital One is just one example currently offering a $250 bonus after you make two $500 transfers into a new checking account. But you can Google bank bonuses and see which banks are offering up bonuses at any time.

2) Hotel and airline loyalty programs

Become a member of any and all free airline and hotel loyalty programs that you have plans to stay with. If you had a recent trip, you can also sometimes earn points retroactively by filling out a form on their website or contacting customer service.

One you become a loyalty member, check those airline website portals (like American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping or United MileagePlus Shopping) for deals that earn bonus points by clicking through to retailers before making a purchase.

3) Browser extensions

Install browser extensions like Rove, which will alert you when there's a bonus miles offer online for a certain retailer. Rove miles can then be transferred to airline and hotel partners. (You'll earn 500 bonus miles by signing up with my link.)

Another favorite of mine is Capital One Shopping. Over the last several months, I've earned over $250 in bonuses that I redeemed for REI gift cards to buy gear for an upcoming trip. (You'll earn a $80 bonus after using the browser extension for 90 days if you use my link.)

4) Dining rewards programs

Sign up for dining rewards programs (Alaska Mileage Plan Dining, Delta SkyMiles Dining) and link your debit or credit card to earn points at participating restaurants you were already eating out at anyways.

5) Leverage your rent payments

Use platforms like Bilt Rewards to earn points on rent payments without transaction fees, even without their credit card (though the card offers more rewards).

Go ahead and give these a try, because who doesn't love free money ๐Ÿ˜‰
