What you need to know before transferring points

Hey Reader,

Before you make your first points transfer from your bank to an airline or hotel transfer partner, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Even if you've done this a few times, there may be some tricks in here for you, so keep reading.

Let's run through them so you don't have any unwanted surprises before booking your next trip with points.

  • DON'T transfer points speculatively. Points transfers are one way only - so once you transfer them to a partner, those points are stuck there. Only make the transfer if you are ready to hit book.
  • DON'T make multiple points transfers back to back. Make sure you double (even triple) check the number of points you need to transfer, and avoid transferring points to multiple transfers without waiting a few days in between. Back to back points transfers sometimes get flagged as fraud and points can get stuck as pending for several days. This means that business class seat you had your eye on could get snatched up before your points are ready for use.
  • DO call or chat with the airline you're looking to transfer to, to see if they can hold a seat for you. If your points get stuck in limbo, you won't be stressed about that seat being booked by someone else. This is really only applicable if there is limited reward availability on a particular flight.
  • DO make sure the name on your loyalty accounts matches exactly to your credit card account.
  • DO check this table for transfer bonuses and transfer timelines.
